It has been reported that approximately 50% of all pregnant women experience back pain during pregnancy and 50% to 75% experience back pain during labor. However, only 21% of pregnant women with back pain seek consultation with their medical physicians.
Several physiologic and endocrinologic changes occur in pregnancy that prepares a woman’s body for the developing baby. These changes include protruding abdomen which increases the back curve, pelvic changes, and postural distortions. In addition, the increase in progesterone, estrogen, and relaxin throughout gestation, especially in the third trimester, brings about pelvic hypermobility and decrease in spinal stabilization.
Although low back pain is an inevitable complication during pregnancy, relief is available to allow moms a comfortable experience. Chiropractic care is effective in removing misalignments to allow the spine and pelvis to stabilize the body during pregnancy. Furthermore, reducing muscle spasms and strengthening postural muscles can be beneficial to alleviating many symptoms experienced during pregnancy.
Dr. Ashley is one of the few chiropractors in the West Houston area that is certified in the Webster Technique by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. A specific chiropractic adjustment developed by Larry Webster, D.C., Founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), which enables chiropractors to establish balance in the pregnant women’s pelvis and reduce undue stress to the uterus and supporting ligaments. This balanced state allows the fetus to assume the correct presenting position. Although Webster technique has become widely known in the obstetrics community, this technique can be performed on any weight-bearing individual presenting with pelvic/sacral imbalance.
